What brings you happiness? I asked a few of my friends and this is some their responses:
“Music, in any form”
“Peace of Mind”
It is a wonder such simple things can bring us pleasure.
I remember listening to an interview with Goldie Hawn. She was asked what she wanted to grow up to be when she was little. She said, “I want to be happy”. At the time, I thought what a strange thing to ask for, everyone can be happy. But, as we learn in life, happiness does not come easy. It is really a process. You first have to decide to be happy, no matter what; then you deal with the “no matter what”. Happiness is being grateful and thankful for everyday of life and everything that comes with it. It is ignoring where you are in life and being happy right where you are. It is ignoring what you want, and being content with what you have. It is being present and accountable to your life and being at ease with it. It is not an easy thing to do. I have wrestled with some of these questions myself. There are times I would think to myself more money would bring me happiness; more notoriety would bring me happiness; recognition would bring me happiness. But then I am reminded of the suicides of Kate Spade and Anthony Bourdain. These two people who, arguable, had all these things, and yet were not happy.
So maybe happiness is not a state of mind. I think happiness is appreciating life and living in every moment. Happiness is not about things, but about experiences. It is taking in the cool, calm silence of the morning when you are the only one awake. It is a good book read for the first time. It is buying a flat bread pizza at the movies and watching the previews before the movie comes on. Happiness is whatever makes you happy. It is whatever you want your life to be.
That is why the next two months are dedicated to “Be Happy”; articles from “How to be Happy”, to “What Happy People Do Differently”; to “Why We Are Unhappy” are in L.I.G.H.T. Beauty makes me happy as you know, and I have gathered articles on the trends and the launches for BEAUTIFUL, INSIDE AND OUT.
And in WOMEN OF WISDOM (W.O.W.), I highlight four beautiful, powerful women doing what makes them happy.
What does happiness look like? To quote Oprah, “…my happiness looks like my life”.
